Sherlock - Season 1 is a 2010 TV series, aired for the first time in Italy in 2011, created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
Sherlock is a series - if three long episodes each as a movie can really be called "series", but better not to contradict the British - exquisitely British produced by BBC One. A contemporary transposition of the events of the well-known Baker Street detective, one could say, if it were not that, although set in a twenty-first century London, the show reflects a soul that cannot be more Victorian. To create the series are Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, already responsible for the success of the new Doctor Who, and completely at ease with the canon of the novels and tales of Conan Doyle. The 2010 Sherlock Holmes, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is a young man, elegant and athletic, naturally very keen and brilliant, and equally naturally at the limits of the sociopath. He lives at 221B in Baker Street and works (unpaid, actually) as a consultant detective for Scotland Yard, helping Inspector Lestrade to resolve seemingly insoluble cases. He does not smoke a pipe, but abuses nicotine patches and also has a magnifying glass, essential and very chic.
In the first episode of Sherlock, A Study In Pink, a pleasant reinterpretation of A Study in Red, he meets his roommate and future inseparable adventure companion, Dr. John Watson. Who has the face of Martin Freeman (already in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and in many other films) and has nothing to do with the somewhat slow and good-natured character that the collective imagination associates with his name. As also in Conan Doyle, this Watson is a veteran doctor of the war in Afghanistan, and his lightning friendship with the solitary Holmes appears natural and justified by a great admiration and mutual respect.
But Sherlock deserves to be seen not only for the excellent level of acting, which produces exciting exchanges between the two protagonists and allows Cumberbatch to drunk the spectator with the quick explanations of his reasonings; the direction (which in two cases is by Paul McGuigan, film director), the photography and the script are of the highest quality, and offer three small films (each episode lasts an hour and twenty minutes) intriguing and full of rhythm.
Fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, then, will go in jujube broth to recognize the amount of quotes and references to the original work: more than a tribute, it was said, a makeover that manages to restore the whole spirit of the literary Sherlock. And then there is London: ultramodern buildings, taxis and illuminated signs, of course, but not for this reason without smoky alleys and night glimpses. Nor of Chinese communities dedicated to shady trades, crazy and genialoid serial killers, and, of course, the arch-enemy of all time, James Moriarty. The third episode of Sherlock ends with a gigantic cliffhanger on the latter: the BBC has announced a second season for next summer, to the delight of the already many fans left with bated breath. It is hoped that, this time, Gatiss and Moffat will give us more than three episodes, which with this quality of writing and direction are really too few.
